Almost all major US universities have a Chinese Student Association (CSA) or Chinese Student and Scholar Association (CSSA). They vary in size, from thousands to several members, depending on the number of Chinese students on campus. Each of these self-governing organizations has its own constitution or mission. A few are active all year round, organizing large scale programs. Most become known or active during the Chinese New Year and Moon Festival celebrations. They are local centers for Chinese students to get together, sharing experiences, life tips, games and Chinese food. They play an important role in communication with fellow American students for cultural exchange and mutual understanding. Members of these CSA or CSSA come and go, the spirit and structure remain.
The most important role of the CSA/CSSA is to provide assistance to the new students from China. They arrange airport pick up, provide all kinds of life tips, survival guide and some times a Top 10 list. We encourage all Chinese new students to contact the CSS/CSSA at your accepting unviversity before their departure from China.
